Mission

Our mission is to provide students with autism and other developmental and intellectual challenges the opportunity to achieve to their highest academic potential while developing practical behavioral, communication and daily living skills toward improved community integration and success. Damar Charter Academy utilizes best practice and research informed teaching and support strategies tailored specifically to each student as developed and reflected in an individual education plan.

History and Vision

Damar Charter Academy (DCA) emerged in 2011, the result of a successful collaboration between Damar Services, Inc. and the City of Indianapolis' Office of Education Innovation. In January 2010, Damar convened the Damar Charter Academy Staff Advisory Council and participated in an extensive formal application process culminating with the City-County Council’s vote on February 28, 2011 to approve the school’s charter.

Damar Charter Academy already has received the support and encouragement of education leaders throughout the state, including Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Bennett and the leadership of both Indianapolis Public Schools and the Metropolitan School District of Decatur Township. As a public charter school, it offers parents from across Indiana a much needed, free educational alternative for their children with special needs.

Damar Charter Academy operates as a separate entity from (and in addition to) Damar Academy (DA), a fully-accredited, private school founded in 1994, while providing similar services in a slightly different setting on Damar’s campus. The school is designed to meet the criteria for excellence identified by its sponsor — the Mayor of Indianapolis’ Office of Education Innovation — and adheres to the standards established for all public schools in the state of Indiana.

Among the school’s goals are plans to influence state legislation that would make the Indiana Department of Education’s implementation of Special Diploma Options (currently used in Florida charter schools) a viable possibility for Indiana students.
